When users search on Baidu, your page title is often the very first thing they see, and it often decides whether they click or not.
That’s why titles are so important. They help users quickly understand what your page is about and improve your visibility in search results.
To improve search quality, Baidu introduced the Baidu Search Webpage Title Guidelines, which help websites write clearer, more accurate, and more use friendly titles.
The goal of Baidu title guidelines is simple: provide a better search experience for users, and better traffic for quality websites.
What is a Page Title?
Let’s start with the basics.
A page title is simply a short and clear description of what a webpage is about.
For example:

Why Page Titles Matter
So why should you care about page titles?
Because when someone searches on Baidu, the title is usually the first thing they notice. In just a second or two, they’ll decide whether your page is worth clicking.
That’s why getting your page title right is one of the most important parts of SEO for any website.
Baidu Title Guidelines
Let’s break this down into two parts, what makes a good title, and what to avoid.
Principles of a Good Title
A strong page title usually follows a few simple rules:
- Every page should have a clear and unique title.
- Make sure the title reflects what the page is about.
- Keep it short, clear, and easy to read.
- Avoid overly long titles or keyword stuffing.
- Use proper punctuation and follow Baidu’s recommended formatting rules.
Types of Titles to Avoid
Now let’s look at what can actually hurt your rankings.
If a page title is misleading or doesn’t match the real content, Baidu may limit its visibility in search results.
1. Fake Official Website
This happens when a non-official website tries to look like an official source.
2. Titles That Don’t Match User Expectations
For example, a title says a file can be downloaded or viewed online, but the page doesn’t actually offer it. Instead, it only pushes users to download an app.
Another case is when a title claims “Baidu Cloud download available” or “online viewing supported,” but neither feature is actually provided.
This creates a poor user experience and can damage Baidu SEO content authority.
3. Partially Misleading Titles
This is when the title promises something specific, like a ranking list of universities, but the page only shows a simple list without any real ranking information.
4. Keyword-Stuffed Titles
Keyword stuffing is one of the most common SEO mistakes.
Some websites repeat the same keyword multiple times in an attempt to improve rankings. In reality, this usually hurts readability and makes the page look spammy.
Type 1: Keyword repetition: Repeating the same keyword too many times in one title.
Type 2: Keyword overload: Adding too many similar keywords or tags in the same title.
In both cases, the title becomes messy and less useful for users.
Best Practices for Writing High-Quality Page Titles
A good page title does two things at once: it clearly tells users what the page is about, and it helps them decide whether to click.
In Baidu search results, well-written titles are also more likely to perform better in visibility and clicks.
Recommended Title Structure
In most cases, a good Baidu title follows this format:
Core keyword + modifiers
To keep it clean and easy to read, it’s recommended to use no more than three modifiers.
Here’s how it works:
| Page Type | Page Type Description | Recommended Format | Examples |
| Homepage | The homepage is the entry point of an entire website. | Format: Site name / brand name – Homepage / Official website / sloganNote: The main keyword is the brand name. Modifiers may include terms such as “official website,” “homepage,” “Home,” as well as the site’s slogan or parent brand name. | 优酷首页淘宝网 – 淘!我喜欢 京东 – 正品低价、品质保障、配送及时、轻松购物! |
| Category Pages | Category pages within a website. | Format: Category name – Parent category (optional) – Site nameNote: The core keyword is the category or topic. You can add the parent category and site name as modifiers. If you include the site name, it should be placed at the end. | 男士频道 – 唯品会 优酷财经 – 优酷 |
| Subcategory Pages | Subcategory pages are content around a specific topic from different angles or attributes. | Format: Topic – Attribute – Site nameNote: The main keyword is the topic. You can add related attributes or parent category details as modifiers. If you include the site name, it should always go at the end. | 成都旅游攻略 – 玩法路线 – 自由行攻略 – 携程旅行 |
| Content Pages | These are detailed pages like articles, product, or videos. | Structure: Content title – Category (optional) – Site nameNote: The core keyword is the content itself, such as the article title, product name, or video name. You can add the category or site name as modifiers, but the site name should always be at the end.The title should clearly describe the page in one sentence without unnecessary repetition. | 红烧肉的做法 – 菜谱 – 香哈网 18号台风“泰利”生成,或成今年“风王”! – 中国新闻网 |

Baidu Title Rewriting Mechanism
Baidu may automatically rewrite your page title if it believes the original version is unclear, misleading, or over-optimized.
- For keyword-stuffed homepages, Baidu may replace the title with the site or company name.
- For unclear pages, Baidu may rewrite the title using key content from the page so users can understand it better.
For example, the homepage title below contains too many repeated SEO keywords, Baidu replaces it with only the website name.
